Everett Thomas Koenig

Everett Thomas Koenig, 94, of Pender, NE, formerly of Bowdon, ND, was united with his Lord and Savior on Friday, December 23, 2016 at Legacy Garden Rehabilitation and Living Center in Pender, NE under AseraCare Hospice. Memorial services will be Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Pender; Pastor Steven Breazier will be officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. The burial will be held at a later date in Bowdon, ND. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Pender. Everett was born May 24, 1922 on the family farm, the son of Henry and Eva (Carl) Koenig of Chaseley, ND. He attended country school through eighth grade, took three years of high school by correspondence and graduated from Bowdon (ND) Public High School. He entered the U.S. Army at Fort Snelling, MN on March 15, 1945, serving during the Asian Pacific Theater, WWII, as a T/4 Technician in the Medical Corp, Schofield Barracks Hospital, Oahu, HI. He was honorably discharged on November 18, 1946. He then attended schooling for farming/mechanical training in Fessenden, ND. On July 20, 1947, Everett married Shirley Elhard in Edgeley, ND. They purchased a farm 5 ½ miles south of Bowdon, where they farmed, milked cows, and raised livestock. The couple later divorced. He drove the Star Route Mail truck from Jamestown, ND to Turtle Lake, ND. He then attended the Medical Institute of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN where he graduated as a Laboratory and X-Ray Technician. He was employed by Johnson Medical Hospital in Buffalo, WY, and later Pender Community Hospital in Pender, which he retired from in 1994. He married Betty Novak on October 22, 1965 at the United Church of Pender. The couple lived in Pender. Betty passed away December 30, 2009 and Everett entered Legacy Garden Rehabilitation and Living Center on February 23, 2012. He was a member of the United Church of Pender and loved spending time reading the bible and helping others. He also enjoyed playing cards, his computer, “Huskers” football, singing, music, traveling, and taking pictures. He is survived by his daughter, Diana (Gerald) Carlson of Spiritwood, ND; three stepsons, Ed (Gayle) Novak, of Englewood, CO, Larry (Jan) Novak of Aurora, CO, and Jim (Barb) Novak of Overland Park, KS; stepdaughter, Cheryl (Rev. Kenneth) Walden of Bedford, IN; sister, Margaret (Richard) Otto of Bowdon, ND; two brothers, Willis “Bill” (Amanda) Koenig of Mandan, ND, and LeRoy (Betty) Koenig of Bowdon, ND; 19 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his special friends and caregivers, Karen Williams, Joyce & the late Leroy Novak, Ken & Herk Olsson. Everett was preceded in death by his parents; son, Dale Thomas Koenig; grandson, Michael Gerald Carlson; second wife, Betty; and stepson, Delmar Novak; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
