E. Vivian Hartwig

E. Vivian (Pieper) Hartwig, 87, of Pender, Nebraska died surrounded by her family on Friday, December 18, 2020 at her home in Pender. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 10, 2021, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Pender, with Pastor Karen McNeill-Utecht officiating. Following the service, the family invites everyone to the church social hall to share memories of Vivian and enjoy some coffee and desserts. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to the family for future designation. Munderloh - Smith Funeral Home of Pender is in charge of the arrangements. Vivian was born on October 21, 1933 in Pender, NE, the daughter of Friedrich and Emma (Ahlers) Pieper. She attended Pender High School, graduating in 1951. Vivian was a lifelong member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender. She was baptized, confirmed and married there. On October 21, 1956, Vivian was united in marriage to Kenneth Hartwig. For many years, Vivian worked at the Pender Court House as the Thurston County Assessor. Following her retirement, Vivian was active quilting as a member of two quilting guilds, was a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, where she served as past president, member of Retired NE Assessors, the Classic’s Car Club of Onawa and the Nebraska Token Club. Along with her love for quilting, Vivian enjoyed researching family genealogy. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Over the many years she met a lot of people, and was common for her to know someone from just about everywhere she went. Vivian is survived by her daughters, Katherine (Earl) Snyder of Sioux City, IA, Sheryl (Donovan) Ehrman of Greeley, CO and Christine Glissman of Pender, NE; son, William (Karen) Hartwig of Fremont, NE; special person (like one of her own daughters), Mary Paeper of Pender, NE; eight grandchildren, Lisa (James) Glissman-Mayner, Emily Glissman, Quinn Ehrman, Earl (Alex) Snyder, Kathryn (Isaiah) LeGare, Hannah (Seth) DeMoss, Noel Johnson, Autumn Johnson; three great grandchildren, Derek, Pheobe and Mia Glissman-Mayner. She was preceded in death by her parents, step-mother, Marie Pieper, husband Kenneth, brother Edwin (Dorothy) Pieper and grandson Brian Glissman.
