James L. Sherlock

June 25, 1932 — November 26, 2023

James Leonard Sherlock, 91, of Emerson, NE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 26, 2023, at Heritage of Emerson in Emerson, NE.  

Memorial services for James and Maxine Sherlock, of Emerson, Nebraska will be held on Friday, May 17, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Emerson, NE, with a visitation starting at 10:00 a.m.  A luncheon will follow the memorial service in the church social hall.  A private family burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Emerson, NE.  Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation.  Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Emerson, NE.  

Jim was born on June 25, 1932, to Thomas and Erma (McLaughlin) Sherlock in Emerson, NE.  He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.  He attended and graduated from Emerson High School in 1950.  On June 1, 1952, Jim married Maxine Marie Mattison. To this union the couple had three children.  Jim worked at John Deere in Emerson for a few years before he purchased Jim’s Service Station on the highway.  Jim attended the Fire Academy in Maryland and enjoyed serving and helping others.  He also was a part-time police officer in Emerson for several years.

He was an active member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, the Emerson Fire and Rescue Department, serving for over 40 years.  Jim’s station wagon served as the first rescue squad in Emerson.  He also helped create the Junior Fire Cadet Program.  Jim served on the Emerson City Board, State Ambulance Board in Lincoln, Emerson Housing Authority Board, and an active member of the Patriot Riders.  In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking, working in his yard, and loved to ride his Harley Davidson motorcycle. 

Jim is survived by his wife, Maxine Sherlock of Emerson, NE; daughters, Linda (Lonnie) Ford, of Pender, NE, Connie (Dave) Duffy, of Wayne, NE; son, Ronald Sherlock of Emerson, NE; 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; twin sister, Lucille Moody-Bergstrom; brother, Clifford Sherlock;

Jim is preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law, Faye Sherlock; brothers-in-law, Harold Bergstrom and Gayle Moody.
