Warren Mayberry

February 3, 1926 — July 26, 2018

Warren Mayberry, 92, of Pender, NE, passed away Thursday, July 26, 2018 at his home in Pender. A memorial service will be Saturday, August 4, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in rural Pender; Pastor Kathy Montira will be officiating. The inurnment with military honors will be in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland in Sioux City, IA. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Pender. Warren Thomas Mayberry was born on February 3, 1926 to William and Alice (Hulsebusch) Mayberry near Thurston, NE.   They moved to Pender where he attended high school. He always spent as much time as possible with Grandpa Theodore and Grandma Anna Hulsebusch on their farm west of Pender. He married Mildred A. Schroeder on February 8, 1948 in a double wedding with Mildred’s sister Dorothy and Duane Slaughter.Warren enlisted in the Army in 1944 and served in the Battle of the Bulge where he was wounded in the head and shoulder. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.  He was honorably discharged in 1946. Warren was born a farmer and farmed all of his life until 2002. He was a sinus cancer survivor since 2002. He enjoyed traveling and made many friends in Florida, New Mexico, Arizona, Minnesota and Texas. Warren also loved fishing during his summers spent in Minnesota, or anywhere he could find a fishing hole. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion Post 55 in Pender. Warren was known as a man who never met a stranger. He is survived by his wife, Mildred; daughters, Mary (Henry) Luthhuaser of Aurora, CO, Sharon Newell of Omaha, NE, and Kathy (Mitch) Gagne of Omaha, NE; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild.He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dale Mayberry; sister-in-law, Violet Jefferies; and granddaughter, Erica Brondum. He will be missed by many.
